Heyoka's Song
My horse walks backwards,
My moon rises at noon,
My night is milky white.
Wind is my steadiness.
If you give me your heart,
I will wear it upside down
On the sleeve turned inside out.
There is no heart for me.
If you tell me your secret
I will tell it to the mountains
For everyone to hear.
There are no secrets for me.
On the wedding days
I paint my face with funeral ashes,
I dance on the fresh graves of my friends.
There is no family for me.
Yet I can promise you
Spring among the snows,
Flowers in the desert,
Seas of cold fire under my skin.
My moon rises at noon,
My night is milky white.
Wind is my steadiness.
If you give me your heart,
I will wear it upside down
On the sleeve turned inside out.
There is no heart for me.
If you tell me your secret
I will tell it to the mountains
For everyone to hear.
There are no secrets for me.
On the wedding days
I paint my face with funeral ashes,
I dance on the fresh graves of my friends.
There is no family for me.
Yet I can promise you
Spring among the snows,
Flowers in the desert,
Seas of cold fire under my skin.
